INTRODUCING: EMILYA NDME

A new artist that’s recently on our radar is professionally known as Emilya Ndme. The Italian based singer songwriter uses her experiences and emotions to create an utterly cathartic blend of music, with electro-alt-pop sensibilities. Her work feels like a refuge, not just to us but herself, her unique style being a powerful reflection of her influences, yet unmistakenly her own; citing Boygenius and The Last Dinner Party amongst a few. She released her debut record ‘Thank You For Your Complaints’ in 2020, and is now teasing her next one.

In the past, Emilya Ndme has creatively harnessed the soundscapes of Mars, using recordings from NASA to craft a unique, spacey blend of music. The use of otherworldly sounds from the Red Plant, and the fusion of textures and atmospheric melodies, created a sonic experience that transports listeners to distant cultures. This glance into her incredible experimentation is just one of the reasons why Emilya Ndme has captured our attention.

My Best is her latest single, released last Friday, taken from her new album ‘Piss Off The Neighbour’ - recorded, produced, and mixed by Fulvio Masini (Unbox Studio) and mastered by Giovanni Versari (La Maestà). Hauntingly beautiful and incredibly atmospheric, My Best takes us on a journey of struggle, restriction and the search for freedom. In an introspective look into the pressures of giving it your all within the confinements of a relationship, she captures the turmoil of fleeting moments while also embracing the healing that follows.

She says: “[Then] there was the need to protect my ‘reputation,’ which is just a social construct, a form of torture that strips you of your freedom. So, like a king alone in his kingdom, I drew boundaries using my own fears.”

With urgent vulnerability, dreamy soundscapes and rocky sensibilities, this one will for sure capture the attention of the right people. It picks up an evoking pace, with honey-rich vocals laced with attitude and a punky concoction of alt-pop features and a riot grrl spirit.

So let’s get to know Emilya Ndme:

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF

I'm Emilya Ndme, an alternative pop artist from Genoa, Italy. My music journey began as a personal exploration, translating emotions and experiences into melodies and lyrics. The response has been so fulfilling: channelling emotions, fears, distrust, and resentment into music is so therapeutic and liberating that it has been an addiction for me since I was a child, in the best sense.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO MUSIC?

Music has always been my refuge. Growing up in Genoa, I was surrounded by so many sounds from the sea's lullaby to the city's hustle. I started playing instruments at a young age and gradually transitioned into writing my own songs, driven by a need to express myself. I always go through music to make my dreams and visions real and to express my whole eclectic personality.

GIVE US THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND

Powerful, introspective, and alternative.

CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE CREATIVE PROCESS BEHIND THE UPCOMING ALBUM?

The album, titled "Piss off the Neighbour," is a product of late-night sessions and spontaneous inspirations. Working with Fulvio Masini, we focused on blending organic and electronic elements to evolve a new sound for Emilya Ndme. Each song is a chapter of a larger story, reflecting personal experiences and our both musical influences.

YOUR RECENT SINGLE, "MY BEST," WHAT’S IT ABOUT?

"My Best" delves into the struggle of self-justification and the human tendency to lie to ourselves to avoid guilt. It's about giving everything and hoping it's enough, even when faced with internal and external conflicts. The indie-rock atmosphere amplifies the intensity of these feelings.

WHAT’S NEXT?

After "My Best," I'm gearing up for the album release and planning a series of live shows. I want to connect with my audience on a deeper level and share these new songs in a live setting.

LASTLY, WHO ARE YOU LISTENING TO AT THE MOMENT?

I'm currently obsessed with Boygenius, Wolf Alice, Last Dinner Party, Paramore. I think that I resonate with their girlhood and very defined sound and aesthetic.
