We’ve recently had our attention drawn to someone utterly captivating here at Rockstate and we’ve had her on repeat since. Meet Avalon Stone, a Canadian singer-songwriter from Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, who’s had a whirlwind summer.
The post-grunge heavy rocker embarked on her musical journey at an early age, attending a School of Rock camp and performing professionally since she was just 11. Choosing to forgo a traditional university education, she dedicated herself fully to a career in music. A decade later, she has captivated audiences of 15,000 festival goers and shared stages with esteemed acts such as The Goo Goo Dolls and Softcult. Now, she’s unveiling her unreservedly compelling and utterly relatable debut album, ‘Chained’ - which is due this Winter.
Avalon Stone’s latest track ‘Cliffhanger’ is exactly what we all need to hear right now - an unapologetic anthem wrapped in powerful calls of rawness and heartache. It’s a masked ballad, blending heartbreak and vulnerability with cinematic soundscapes that feel larger than life. The song pulses with nail-biting boldness, capturing the tension of being caught between hope and despair. Its defiant sound resonates with fierce determination, making ‘Cliffhanger’ both an emotional rollercoaster and an anthem of strength. It doesn’t just tell a story; it commands your attention and refuses to let go.
Cliffhanger takes us through the highs and lows of being stuck on the edge; where fear battles with hope, knowing that whilst you’re trapped amidst chaos, the power to move forward is yours. It’s not a sad song - it’s fierce, knowing the decision to break free is in the palms of your own hand. She places herself in a world absent of escape, delving into the struggle against inner darkness in pursuit of liberation, featuring seductively sweet melodies and honey-rich vocals that radiate attitude, effectively capturing raw emotion in every corner.
So let’s get to know Avalon Stone:
Tell us a bit about yourself
I’m Avalon Stone—an alt-rock artist with a deep love for blending dark emotions with raw, powerful sound. My music comes from a place of emotional intensity, and I’m drawn to themes that others might shy away from. Beneath the hard exterior, I’m a dreamer, always searching for meaning in the chaos.
How did you get into music?
Music has always been the way I navigate the world. I started performing when I was 10 and never looked back. The stage, the energy, the way you can express what words alone can't—that’s what drew me in. It became my way of communicating, and I haven’t stopped since.
Give us three words to describe your sound
Grungy. Vulnerable. Defiant.
Can you tell us a bit about the creative process behind the album?
"Chained" came from a period where I felt... stuck. Every song captures a moment of being trapped in some way—whether by fear, relationships, or self-doubt. The album is raw and messy, like life. Writing it felt like pulling my own chains off, piece by piece. I collaborated with incredible musicians and producers who helped shape the intensity and depth of the sound. We played the songs live a lot before recording, so every track has that live, visceral energy.
Your recent single, Cliffhanger, what’s it about?
“Cliffhanger” is all about that intense moment of indecision in a relationship where you’re torn between holding on and letting go. It’s based on the same relationship I described in “Shaking Me Up,” but now it’s about facing the choice to leave or stay. It explores the fear of falling and the desperation to hold onto the vision of what could be, even when you know it’s not healthy. It’s that point where you’re clinging to the wall, knowing you can’t stay there forever, but also not ready to make the jump. It’s about being stuck and scared but also hopeful for change. You’re hanging on the edge, torn between the vision of what could be and the reality of the chaos. It’s that heart-wrenching point where you’re just... stuck. But it’s not a sad song—it’s fierce. There’s power in knowing the decision to get un-stuck is yours.
What’s next?
After "Chained" drops, I’m diving into the next album. It’s already half-written and comes from a different place—more about freedom, finding yourself again after being unchained. But first, I’m gearing up for some live shows, including some festival performances that are going to be wild.
Lastly, who are you listening to at the moment?
Right now, I’m deep into Bad Omens and The Warning. There’s something about their intensity and unapologetic sound that hits me hard. Also, some Alice in Chains—because, honestly, that never gets old.
As Avalon Stone prepares to unveil Chained, it's clear that her journey has only just begun. With a fierce spirit and an unyielding commitment to her craft, she is poised to make a lasting impact in the music world. Keep an eye on Avalon as she continues to push boundaries, connect with audiences, and explore the depths of her creativity. The future looks bright and we can’t wait to see where her music takes her next.
